Another Brass Playlist for Your Listening Pleasure

Another Brass Listening Playlist

Here's another playlist of brass ensemble music, originally written for brass. Below you'll find a little about each piece and a link to a recording. Enjoy!

Nachtmusik is a brass quintet in two movements, written by Oskar Bohme in 1935. Bohme was a German trumpet player who had been living and teaching in Russia. The timing of this piece is interesting because Bohme likely wrote the piece just after he was arrested and exiled to Orenburg (southern Russia) under Stalin's regime.

3 Pieces for Horn Quartet (Naxos Link), was written by Julien-Francois Zbinden. Zbinden is a Swiss pianist and composer with a particular affinity for jazz. As far as I can conclude from my research, Zbinden is 103 years old and was still giving performances at age 100!

Low Motion is a piece for tuba ensemble written by Ingo Luis, a German trombonist. This recording is by the Tennessee Tech Tuba Ensemble, who has put out an overwhelming number of great recordings. If you are looking for great examples of low brass ensemble music, look no further!

Brass Quintet No. 1 by Alec Wilder was written in 1959. The piece was originally written for the New York Brass Quintet. The piece features each instrument in different movements, and reflects Wilder's composition style, which also branched into pop music. Wilder also wrote music that was recorded by Frank Sinatra and other stars of the time.

Calls and Echoes is a trumpet duet written by Verne Reynolds. In 1984, Reynolds composed the piece for his Eastman colleagues Barbara Butler and Charlie Geyer. There is a large amount of truly virtuosic technique required to play this piece, and the name describes it perfectly.
