South-of-the-Border Brass

Today, we're going to take a look at the "Danza Final (Malambo)" from Alberto Ginastera's orchestral suite and ballet, Estancia. This piece is wildly exciting, and certainly fits the bill of being a finale.
(For your reference, here is a recording of Ginastera's original orchestration.)

J.D. Shaw, former hornist for the Boston Brass, arranged this piece for the group and it appeared on their 2008 album, Latin Nights.

I love the arrangement of this piece for brass because it displays an astounding amount of athleticism on each of the instruments, and because the players give the piece an incredible amount of energy for such a small group.

I was lucky enough to hear the Boston Brass play this piece in 2014, when they came to Luther College and did a master class with the quintet I played in at the time. Playing for and learning from the members of the group was an incredible experience, and one that opened my eyes to the wonderful world of brass chamber music.
(That's me, the trumpet player in the middle!)

So, is the piece Better in Brass? That's for you to decide.
